A healthy smile is something everyone values, but many people unknowingly follow habits or beliefs that do more harm than good. Thanks to easily accessible information—and misinformation—oral health myths spread quickly, leaving individuals confused about what truly helps their teeth and gums. With insights from modern dental care, patients can better understand which common practices support oral health and which ones need to be left behind.
In our previous blog, we discussed the six top guidelines to follow to find the right dental care for you and your family. In this blog, we will go through the common misconceptions surrounding the concept of oral hygiene and dental care.
The truth is, your daily routine plays a major role in your long-term dental wellbeing. From brushing methods to home remedies, it’s important to separate myth from reality so you can protect your smile with confidence. Below, we break down some of the most common dental myths people still believe and uncover the real facts to help you make healthier choices.
Fact: Gentle brushing is actually more effective and safer.
Brushing harder doesn’t mean cleaner teeth; it often means causing long-term damage. With proper guidance from dental care in Sacramento, you can learn that technique matters far more than force.
Fact: It’s not the sugar itself—it’s how long it stays on your teeth.
Sugar plays a role, but timing and oral hygiene are far more important in preventing decay.
Fact: Many dental problems develop silently.
Absence of pain doesn’t guarantee perfect oral health—routine visits to a dentist near you in Sacramento ensure early detection.
Fact: Professional whitening is safe and controlled.
Most whitening concerns come from DIY trends, not safe procedures overseen by a general dentist in Sacramento.
Fact: Mouthwash is helpful, but never a substitute.
While mouthwash enhances cleanliness, it cannot replace the thoroughness of brushing and flossing.
By understanding the truth behind these myths, individuals can make better decisions that support long-term oral wellness. Accurate knowledge leads to stronger enamel, healthier gums, fresher breath, and fewer dental emergencies. Misconceptions may seem harmless, but following them can result in preventable issues—cavities, staining, gum recession, and even tooth loss.
Your dental team plays a crucial role in clearing up confusion. Visiting a trusted dental office in Sacramento ensures that you receive reliable guidance, personalized recommendations, and professional treatments that support a healthier lifestyle.
Oral health myths can mislead even the most well-intentioned individuals, but with proper insight and professional guidance, you can build habits that genuinely protect your smile. Understanding the difference between myth and fact empowers you to take control of your dental routine and make informed choices every day.
Whether it’s brushing correctly, managing sugar intake, or choosing safe whitening options, the truth behind these common beliefs can help you avoid long-term issues and maintain a strong, confident smile for years to come. Call us today at 916-487-5147!

Had a great visit today and got to know the people that work there. They made me feel comfortable as the change of ownership is taking place.

I am so impressed with the entire experience. From the friendly reminders, to entering the office, and especially the dentist! My previous dentist Stephen C Ott, DDS, was incredible. I had the benefits of his gift since 1971. I was worried about finding a new dentist. However, I was blessed to have Dr. Ott recommend his dentist: Dr. Lillian Stojic. I recommend her to all!!!

I've been seeing dr stojic since I moved to town 18 years ago, my whole family has transitioned over there and I love the whole team! Keep up the great work!

Dr. Lilliana and her staff make getting teeth cleaned and a cavity filled as good an experience as possible. They get the job done with minimal pain and discomfort.

I just had a visit to Dr. Stojic's office. My ten year old daughter had an infected tooth that had to be extracted. She was so nervous and scared at the possibility of an extraction. When we arrived we were greeted warmly by her office manager and then by her equally kind assistant who brought us back to her room...

Dr. Lilliana and her staff are not only effective and efficient, but they also remove my anxiety. When I had to have a root canal, I was nervous about the pain. I was given the choice of Nitrous oxide gas and that calmed me.

Dr. Stojic saw two of my children. The youngest was so comforted by her easygoing and confident demeanor that he was the quietest and most still 4 year old I've seen in a dentist chair! Our older son was very afraid of the dentist and has been to a couple other dentists who were unable to treat him because of his scared behavior. Dr. Stojic was very patient and helped him understand what she was doing at every step, which calmed him down so she was able to fill his cavities and even extract a tooth. We were thoroughly impressed with Dr. Stojic and her office and staff.
